Rare Japanese cedar and richly grained keyaki (zelkova) wood ko dansu or small tansu chest. Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Traditionally used to store imP3rtant documents or personal items. Two small drawers are located behind the safe. Warabite style handles made of hand forged iron with side handles for traveling. Lovely rubbed urushi lacquer finish in a rich red tone. Price shown is for one, but we have a pair. Buy one or both! Very good condition. Dimensions: 38” “ deep, 10.5” wide, 16” deep.

Remarkable Japanese lacquer Mogami style ko dansu, personal tansu chest, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. A regional style named after the river Mogami. Extraordinary, highly detailed and wonderfully rendered metalwork throughout with warabite style handles and family mon (crest) incised into round iron lockplates. Chest fashioned of richly finished cedar and dramatic chestnut woods. Deep, roomy drawers offer generous storage and small cabinet below provides additional options with two smaller drawers inside. An exceptional, eye-catching piece and a wonderful addition to any room. Dimensions: 35.5” high, 24” wide, 17” deep.

Exceptional Japanese sword tansu, katana dansu fashioned of warm, lightweight kiri (paulownia) and cedar woods, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Traditionally used to store samurai swords after the Meiji government banned the carrying of weapons in public. A rare find, this tansu features three ample full-length sword drawers, and a smaller one at base for accessories. Fine metalwork includes gracefully curving drawer pulls and rectangular lockplates. A remarkable period piece, in very good condition. Comes with customized wood stand. Dimensions: 20” high w/out stand, 46” wide, 14” deep; stand 10”.
