Rare Japanese two-piece lacquer kannon-dansu, ryobiraki-isho or double-door clothing chest tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Fashioned of warm, lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood and remarkable for its lavishly decorated swing-out doors, which house deep, roomy drawers offering generous storage options. Additional drawers below offering great storage space within. Traditionally used both for clothing and as a symbol of affluence due to it highly decorative, abundant and valuable metalwork. Difficult-to-find, this style of tansu is always in great demand! Very good condition. Dimensions:  36.5” high, 35” wide, 16.5” deep.

Eye-catching Japanese cedar and richly grained keyaki (zelkova) wood choba dansu merchant or document tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Traditionally used to store important documents.  Merchant chests were used by shop merchants to store valuable goods, account books and paper goods. To impress the customers, they were always well designed and constructed of fine, sturdy materials.  Attractive old patina.  Very good condition. Dimensions:  36.5” high, 12.5” wide, 12.5” deep.

Wonderful Japanese lacquer isho-dansu or clothing chest tansu from Niigata prefecture, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Bold chest features sturdy cypress wood with rich, red lacquer finish on top and sides and finely grained chestnut wood drawers. Handsome metalwork features etched family crest or mon and gracefully formed warabite handles which echo the natural arc of the warabi, the Japanese mountain fern for which they are named. Deep, long drawers offer generous storage space and a hinged cabinet offers additional options. A fine example of traditional tansu craftsmanship. Very good condition.
