Magnificent Japanese Sado Island funa-dansu ship tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Traditionally used by merchants to safeguard important valuables while traveling at sea. Many of these chests were so well made, they were rumored to be water-tight in case the ship encountered trouble. This heavyweight keyaki (zelkova) wood piece is an outstanding example showing the abundant metalwork often associated with this type of tansu. Very good condition. Dimensions: 19" high, 21.5" wide, 17" deep.
