Charming Japanese handcarved wood ranma, early 20th-century. Appealing design features inset, fan-shaped cartouches with stylized renderings of plum blossoms, bamboo and pine (the "three friends of winter").  Skillfully crafted with great care. Sturdy, richly grained cedar.  Ranma are traditionally used in a Japanese room between the sliding room divider and the ceiling. The open work ensures easy flow of air from room to room.
