Dramatic, old Japanese peddler’s chest, gyosho bako, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912.  Traditionally strapped and carried on the back of traveling merchant.  Attractive, tall, narrow form.  Sturdy cedar and kiri (paulownia) wood.  Rich, red lacquer and age-old patina. An exceptional and rare find!  Very good condition.  Dimensions:  41" high, 13" wide, 18" deep.
