Japanese Clothing Tansu

Japanese clothing tansu or isho dansu range from the simple kiri (paulownia) wood two- or three-section drawered chest to opulent lacquer chests with highly detailed ironwork, such as the Sendai, Yonezawa, Nihonmatsu, and Tsuruoka.

Regardless of their chosen design and material, all are wonderfully varied and practical for the storage of clothing of any kind, with countless drawers and creative storage spaces and often a secret box tucked inside for special treasures.

Handsome two-piece Nihonmatsu Japanese clothing chest tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Classic style clothing chest from Nihonmatsu, a castle town in Fukushima Prefecture. Substantial chest fashioned of finely grained cedar and keyaki woods. Abundant, dramatic traditional metalwork features large warabite style handles to complement the round iron and brass lock plates. Wonderful motif of a large fish and money bags. The key cover is a raised mallet in silver metal. Carmel-color rubbed lacquer finish. Very good condition. Dimensions: 47” high, 45” wide, 17.5” deep (sections are of equal height for side-by-side display if desired).

Often given as a wedding gift, fashioned of warm, richly finished lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood and remarkable for its lavishly decorated swing-out doors, which house deep, roomy drawers offering generous storage options. Additional drawers below offering great storage space within. Rich auburn brown finish. The lockplates on the two lower drawers have the classic crane and turtle motif to bless the couple with a long and happy married life. Very good condition. Dazzling Japanese two-piece black and red lacquer clothing chest tansu from the castle town of Tsuruoka in Yamagata prefecture, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Bold, wonderfully rendered metalwork throughout features distinctive bird motif, with crane, falcon and water fowl amid pine. The bottom drawer has classic crane and turtle décor, symbols for a long and happy life. Chest fashioned entirely of sturdy cedar wood and warm kiri (paulownia). The use of black lacquer is unique to this northern area of Japan and is achieved by adding sumi charcoal to raw lacquer. Kakute square handles. Remarkable Japanese five-drawer lacquer clothing chest tansu, Meiji period, c. 1868-1912. Bold, wonderfully rendered metalwork throughout. Chest fashioned of sturdy cedar and kiri (paulownia) woods. Decorative copper lockplates feature crane, bamboo, pine and plum motifs. The “three friends of winter” are represented by an ensemble of bamboo, pine and plum. The Gumbai style handles with the soft curve representing a style of lacquered fan that was used by the Samurai when starting a battle. Deep, roomy drawers offer generous storage.
